Head Bobbing
Have you ever wondered why a pigeon
Always bobs its head
When they're walking along on the ground and peckin'
Picking up crumbs of bread
If you think it's just for balance that's a misconception
It's more to do with vision
With eyes on the side it helps depth perception
And to see the world with better precision
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
They thrust it forward and hold their head still
And their body walks right past
They don't do the bobbing walking on a treadmill
With surroundings not moving fast
The hold phase lets them recognise movement
And take in the whole scene
The speed of the thrust gives them 3-d improvement
The near and the far and the in between
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
With an average speed of over 40 miles an hour
They don't bob when they're in flight
And the head thrust speed of 20 miles an hour
Gives that parallax motion sight
Birds with small steps don't tend to bob
And hopping birds don't either
The hop in itself kinda does the same job
Between each hop a tiny breather
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Bob bob bobbedy bob
Other birds do it not just pigeons
Magpies blackbirds storks and herons
Swimming birds too like coots and moorhens
And cranes and crows and pheasants and chickens
Bob bob bobbedy bob (check it)
Bob bob bobbedy bob (move)
Bob bob bobbedy bob (peck it)
Bob bob bobbedy bob (groove)
Thrust phase
Hold phase
20 millisecond gaze
